How to get to Shanghai, China for $605 roundtrip after taxes

Update @ 5:23 PM : Delta seems to have caught on and the price is now back up unfortunately. There were reports that the reverse was working for a while as well (out of a Canadian city, back into a U.S. city). Could still be worth trying.
-----------------

So the cheapest flights from Montreal to Shanghai, China usually bottom out at around $1100 roundtrip after taxes.

But there's a creative way to get there for nearly half that price, by flying out of Burlington but back home to Montreal. How? Here's a tutorial...

1. Start with a multi-city search on Kayak (or Orbitz, or wherever)...

https://www.kayak.com/flights?mc=y

2. Choose to fly from Burlington (BTV) to Shanghai (PVG) on November 7th

3. Choose to fly from Shanghai (PVG) to Montreal (YUL) on November 21

Or you can just go to this link if you want to go directly to that fare search.

You'll see that it comes up around $605 CDN roundtrip after taxes!

Now you might be thinking that the savings are due to the fact that you're flying out of the U.S. - it's always cheaper to fly from the U.S. right? Actually, on flights to Asia (and many international flights), it's usually not a whole lot cheaper to fly from the U.S. than from Montreal.

If you try a normal roundtrip flight from Burlington to Shanghai for example, you'll see that it comes up around $1100 roundtrip after taxes, similar to Montreal. It's the fact that you're flying out of one city and back to a different one that makes it cheaper in this particular case. This isn't always the case, but right now there seems to be a lot of interesting ones like this to cities in Asia on Delta.

Here's Manila, Philippines for example, down to $763 roundtrip after taxes, about 40% cheaper than what it usually costs roundtrip from either Montreal or Burlington.

Here's Hong Kong, down to $676 roundtrip after taxes

Are there other dates available besides these November dates? Yes, but the only way to find them is through trial and error. I would focus on October/November/early December dates, and use weekdays such as Mondays and Wednesdays to have the best chance of finding them.
