Last minute flight from Montreal to Chicago - $247 roundtrip after tax

Chicago is a surprisingly expensive city to get to from Montreal. Fares can often hover at around $500 roundtrip after tax or more. And you definitely don't often see last minute flights that are cheap on major carriers.
For some reason though, American Airlines and United have both dropped the price of their last minute flights from March 12 to 15 (and March 12-14) down to $247 roundtrip after tax. That's even significantly cheaper than what it would usually cost from Burlington.
